Look Development
& Modeling

World class look development brings digital humans to life through skin shading, textures, materials, and lighting. Grounded in over a decade of capture expertise, we preserve the subtle surface detail and light response that make a face believable, shaping the final look for your production.

Supporting services include facial modeling and likeness refinement, with digital de-aging available for projects that call for it.

Photometric Capture

Our photometric process records skin under controlled lighting patterns and polarized illumination, revealing how its color, fine detail, and reflections change with the light.

Ecco is a licensed user of patented photometric capture technology from USC’s Institute for Creative Technologies (ICT).

Cross and parallel polarized captures help separate diffuse color from surface reflections. We process these images into albedo, specular, and normal maps, then combine the captured surface detail with geometry for modeling, shading, and look development.

The result is a detailed foundation for skin that can be lit for your scene, preserving the pores, creases, and subtle variations that make each person distinctive.

The detail behind the realism

Our capture and processing preserve the fine surface geometry of skin, from pores to subtle creases, alongside its color and reflectance. Together, these details give digital skin its shape, texture, and realism under changing light.

FACs Capture

Facial Action Coding System (FACS) scanning captures isolated facial actions and expression combinations. FACS certified Facial Director, Dan Platt, guides each session to build a consistent expression set that preserves the way each performer realistically moves their face.

We plan the expressions around your character and rig requirements, giving your team detailed reference for facial modeling and animation.

4D Capture

4D capture records the changing shape of the face over time, preserving the movement of skin, the interplay of facial muscles, and the subtle transitions between expressions. From a subtle smile to a full performance, this changing geometry gives artists a detailed foundation for facial animation, rig development, and believable digital characters.

ECCO × FACEFORM

Ecco’s photometric and 4D capture meet Faceform’s ML facial rig development. Talk with us about how this collaboration can support your character and production workflow.

Gaussian Splatting

Gaussian splatting preserves the look of the original shoot, including lighting, reflections, and fine visual detail, while letting you explore the scene from different angles and distances.

A traditional 3D asset is built to be animated and lit for new scenes. A splat recreates what the cameras recorded, making it useful for immersive experiences, exploring locations, and production reference.

03 / ABOUT ECCO

A DECADE OF EXPERTISE
A LASTING OBSESSION

What began with capturing a likeness became an obsession with everything that makes it believable. The smallest skin detail, the way a face moves, and how it responds to light. That pursuit has shaped our technology, our craft, and the way we work with every production.

Along the way, we’ve helped refine capture practices and raise expectations for quality. Leading companies in games, film, and television have trusted Ecco to help bring their characters to audiences around the world.

OVER A DECADE OF CAPTURE

Years of scanning real people and solving production challenges inform every decision we make. Our expertise connects capture, modeling, and look development, with an understanding of what artists need to carry a character through to the final frame.

The technology keeps evolving
The obsession stays

We continue to refine our tools, question our methods, and push for a better result. Because the goal has never changed. Create digital humans that preserve the detail, character, and individuality of the people behind them.
